How to Choose the Best Pixel Pitch Size for Your LED Screen?

When discussing LED displays, LED signs or LED screens, you may often come across a technical phrase “pixel pitch” (sometimes referred to as 'dot pitch'). Understanding the pixel pitch and relation between pixel pitch, resolution and viewing distance allows you to choose the best screens according to your demands.

-What is the pixel pitch?

The pixel pitch is the center-to-center distance between two adjacent pixels measured in millimeters. In short, pixel pitch shows the distance between LED display pixels. Modules with smaller pixel pitches have a smaller empty space between pixels and more pixels on the modules, thus creating higher resolution.

-What’s the best pixel pitch?

Pixel pitches vary depending on the applications. The smaller the pixel pitch, the more details and the higher image quality. The smaller pixel pitch, the closer distance between viewers and the screens. So if you want to know what pixel pitch to choose for your project, the following two parameters are important.

1) Optimal viewing distance

The optimal viewing distance of your display is the distance at which your eyes won’t be able to distinguish the gaps between individual pixels any more but to perceive a consistent  image of the content instead.

Smaller pitches allow for shorter optimal viewing distance. The smaller the pixel pitch, the closer the viewers could get. So small pixel pitches are often used in indoor applications like conference rooms or showrooms. Large pitches, on the other hand, are perfect for long viewing distance experiences like digital signage or billboards on the roads.

For instance, P4 means 4mm pixel pitch. The minimum viewing distance of P4 is 4 meters and the maximum viewing distance is 8 meters. That is to say, the optimal viewing distance of your LED display is two times the pixel pitch(in mm).

2) Budget

Money is a factor that should not be overlooked. A fine (small) pixel pitch has more tiny LED pixels on the module. As a result, it costs more. So even though smaller pixel pitches can deliver viewers better image quality, you have to watch your budget. That is, if the viewers don’t stand close to your LED screen, you can choose a larger pixel pitch.

Armed with the above knowledge, you can now select your best LED display solutions. Please do not hesitate to reach Dakco whenever you want to discuss your the best option for your LED display project.
